Rod Williams has signed a two-year contract extension with Coniston after guiding the club back to the Illawarra Premier League.

“Coniston FC believes Rod shares the club’s passion and commitment to sustained success, and after leading our Club into the Premier League — he was the obvious choice,” Coniston President John Karayiannis said.

“The Club has a vision to be the ‘Destination Club’ by 2020, and we are confident that Rod will lead the Club in this direction.”

Williams has led Coniston into 26 competitive matches in his first season with the club with a win percentage of over 80 percent. This includes 19 wins in the League, seeing them lift the trophy on the final day of the season and he admits Coniston are the right club at the right time in his career.

“I have really enjoyed my time at the club, they are moving in the right direction and it seems appropriate for me to stay with them in the Premier League,” Williams said.

Coniston could be as little as 180 minutes away from a Grand Final trophy this campaign, however, Williams has already marked out a top 11 finish as the goal for 2019. The former APIA Leichhardt Tigers coach cites the exploits of newly-promoted Fernhill this season as a potential benchmark for his side.

“Next season the priority has to be avoiding relegation because the last thing I want is for Coniston to become another statistic,” Williams said.

“I look at what Bruce Tilt [at Fernhill] has done, I think that is something we can aim for and build some stability at this club.”

“I am confident we can be competitive next season and from there we can try to potentially push for top five or even three — depending on certain aspects in 2020.”
