Corrimal’s Galanti earning Mr Fix-it tag with preseason showings
There isn’t anything overtly flash about Matthew Galanti, however, his preseason performances indicate the 21-year-old will be a key figure for Corrimal in 2019.
Galanti has been on the fringes of first grade for a number of years but featured semi-regularly for the Rangers last season including 90 minutes in the Bert Bampton Cup Final.
Though naturally a central midfielder, Galanti has featured across the park for the Rangers in the Fraternity Cup from left fullback to right wing. His two goals have also proved crucial, especially a wonderful header which secured a 1–0 win over Cringila to see his side top Group C with three wins from three.
His versatility, physical traits and awareness — such as dropping in when fullbacks overlap him — make him a coach’s dream according to Corrimal co-coach Robert Jonovski.
“He’s a top player, he’s very athletic and he can play anywhere we ask him and do an outstanding job,” Jonovski said.
“He’s not a young kid anymore just coming into the first grade set up because now he’s got some experience under his belt.”
“He’s going to be an important player for us.”
Galanti is content with being labelled Corrimal’s Mr Fix-it and he believes the experiences of the last campaign will help him and, more crucially in his opinion, his side.
“There are a few of us young boys who found our stride at the end of last season and at the beginning of this season we are finding our feet and gelling well with the more experienced boys,” Galanti said.
“I am looking to play as much as I can, but it extends beyond me to the team on the back of last season, we just missed out on the finals so we are looking for a better 2019, definitely aiming for finals.”
“[Playing out of position is] different, it’s not natural but I’ll play wherever the team needs me, it doesn’t really matter I just play my game and the team plays our particular style.”
Corrimal became the first Premier League side through to the final eight of the preseason competition with the quarter final draw set to take place at the Fraternity Club on Sunday evening.
