The Illawarra Stingrays are set to announce Scott Chipperfield as their head coach for the 2019 Women’s NPL 1 season.

The impending appointment fills the void left by the departure of former Canadian international Carmelina Moscato and follows the recent election of Kathy McDonogh as club president.

Chipperfield retired from professional football in 2012 after a decorated career with the Wollongong Wolves and Swiss powerhouse FC Basel. The left-sided utility’s success extended to the international stage where he earned 68 caps for Australia.

The 42-year-old will take over the Stingrays after a brief spell as head coach of the FC Luzern women’s side who compete in the Swiss Nationalliga A.

There will be pressure on Chipperfield to improve upon Moscato’s exploits. The Canadian guided the club to a second-place finish before bowing out in the second week of the finals.

An official announcement is due to be made as early as next week.
